Senator Oscar Castillo was born in San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca on January 18, 1954.
He graduated as a lawyer at Universidad Nacional del Litoral in 1981.
He is married to Silvia Brocal – who is a notary public- and has two children.
His interest in politics began in his youth. In 1979 he was appointed Secretary at the Students Centre of the Law School at Universidad Nacional del Litoral, and in 1980 he was elected Delegate from said University to the Argentine University Federation.
Execytuve Positions
Mr. Oscar Castillo worked as Secretary General at the Municipality of the Capital City of the Province of Catamarca, from 1983 to 1984. He stood out as Delegate to the National Food Program (1984-1985).
In 1999 he was elected Governor of the Province of Catamarca and his term of office ended in 2003.
Legislative Positions
He was Provincial Deputy and Chairman of the Caucus UCR/Movimiento Popular Catamarqueño from 1985 to 1989.
He was elected National Deputy for two consecutive terms, the first one from 1989 to 1993 and the second one from 1993 to 1997.
He was elected National Senator from 2003 to 2009 and was re-elected for a second term at the elections held on June 28 2009.
Political Career
Mr. Oscar Castillo was President of the Radical Youth Party in Catamarca from 1981 to 1983. He attended the National Convention of the Radical Party from 1983 to 1987.
Between 1985 and 1987 he was Secretary General of the Radical Party in Catamarca. He was appointed Delegate to the National Committee of the Radical Party between 1990 and 1992 , and also between 1992 and 1994. He was elected Chairman of the Provincial Committee of the Radical Party in Catamarca, 1998 -2001. Mr. Oscar Castillo was appointed Delegate to the National Committee of the Radical Party between 1994 and 1996. He was appointed Second Vice-president of the National Committee of the Radical Party during the Presidency of said party by Dr. Raúl Alfonsín, 1993 – 1995; and Third Vice-president of the National Committee of the Radical Party during the Presidency of said party by Dr. Rodolfo Terragno 1995 – 1997.
He was appointed Treasurer and Member of the Executive Board of the National Committee of the Radical Party during the Presidency of said party by Dr. Fernando de la Rua.
Dr. Oscar Castillo created and developed a political alliance known as Frente Civico y Social, a social and political coalition that has governed the Province of Catamarca since 1991.
Awards
Senator Castillo has been awarded the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins, in the Republic of Chile.
In 1990 he received a distinction awarded to all graduates from Universidad del Litoral who were elected as Governors, at the 80º Anniversary of the Creation of the School of Legal and Social Science of said University.
